CiQlovía 2024 Engagement/Activity Station Application

CiQlovía is the Albuquerque version of the global phenomenon known as ciclovía or open streets. The word refers to events where city streets are closed to cars and opened up to people on foot and on bike, outdoor exercise classes, shopping, live music and other activities.

CiQlovía is a FREE event designed to encourage ALL Burqueños and visitors to enjoy our beautiful city and unique neighborhoods.

CiQlovía will be an opportunity to stimulate a community conversation about bicycle and pedestrian issues and public health issues, while also stimulating the local economy and encouraging active lifestyles.

This event will also highlight local businesses, improve community livability, and serve as an opportunity to reimagine our largest public space – STREETS!

CiQlovía is about celebrating community outside. It’s to enjoy our streets and sidewalks with a stroll and laughter. It’s about celebrating life and each other through games, local art, food and more.

It is an opportunity for, and a demonstration of, juniors, seniors and inbetweeners to safely enjoy activities in the street as the priority.

History

The statistics of the I.D. show that San Mateo and Central has become one of the deadliest intersections in the Nation. The I.D. also has one of the highest pedestrian fatalites in the state. This led community organizers to seek change and hosted Albuquerque’s first Ciqlovia in 2014.

In 2016, the organizers of previous CiQlovía events approached the Healthy Here's Active Living Workgroup, a coalition consisting of public health professionals and community members. They discussed the possibility of having two members from the workgroup, the International District Healthy Communities Coalition (IDHCC) and Presbyterian Community Health (PCH), take over the design and execution of CiQlovía. IDHCC is a resident-led coalition with a focus on the wellbeing of Albuquerque's I.D.. In 2018 Ciqlovia was funded by Better Block Challange hosted by AARP. Where experts community members, came together to demonstrate how “auto-dominated, blighted, and underused urban areas” can be turned into centers of pedestrian use.”

Some of the first organizers of Ciqlovia: Valerie Hermanson,

Tierra Reed, and Sarah Ijadi
